Bazley
Continueing the idyll
Bazley Beach and Sezela continue the idyllic
surf, sand and
sun on offer in the Umdoni region.
Bazley Beach is named after Byrne settler, John
Bazley,
who had tremendous influence in developing the area.
He
first arrived in the area in 1852 and pitched his tent on
the banks of
the Illovo River. After a relatively good start, his
farming activities
foundered and he applied for and was granted 612 acres of
land for
sugar farming. He worked hard and prospered and within two
years,
he had established a sugar mill.
Sezela is the Zulu expression for “he who smells
out”
referring to
a wily crocodile which devoured a number of the local
Malangeni
tribesmen living on the banks of the river in the area.
On hearing of
this fearful creature during his 1828 trip south, King
Shaka vowed
that he would have its hide and dispatched his bravest
impis to do
the deed.
When not relaxing, take a walk along the Ndesingane beach
at
low tide and view the rich sea life in the rock pools.
Continue your
search
for nature’s wonders by hiking the Mpiti bush trail,
taking
your binoculars
with you because this coastal bush area also plays host to
abundant bird life.
Bazley Beach is a definite must-stay for caravan
enthusiasts. |
