Execution Rock

To imbibe the rich traditional Zulu culture, head inland from Scottburgh to Dududu and witness at first hand the song and dance of a living culture.

Climb to the peak of the imposing Execution Rock to be treated with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. It is situated on a huge spur of land, which plunges down on both sides into impressive river valleys. A little path winds it s way down to the uMkomazi river where children play in the shallows and women wash clothes.

And last but not least, visit the Sangoma who, with a throw of the bones, can foretell the future. Return with authentic Zulu crafts and if so desired, a customdesigned Zulu name, a sure way to impress friends.

Highflats

Further inland from Umzinto, the small town of Highflats is a convenient base for exploring cultural sites relating to the truly ancient San people. Caves, rock paintings, religious shrines and ceremonial sites bear witness to this fascinating culture’s deep understanding of the relationship between man and nature. The San’s mystical communion with the eland has imprinted much of the region with artistic homage to this regal antelope. The San worshiped the Eland and many of the rock paintings feature these large antelope, usually drawn using a red pigment made from ochre or ferric oxide ground down to a fine powder.

Other colours used by the San were black and white. They painted images such as hand-prints, human figures and religious symbols. Evidence of Voortrekker wagon routes into the Zulu Kingdom from the Drakensberg mountains is found along the old St Faiths road heading seaward from Highflats.

Graves and historical buildings in the area tell the story of their lives. In the centre of town visitors can browse through the new market centre.

Park Rynie

A Small whaling station was developed here in the 1900's. Its remains are sometimes still visible, depending on the beach sand. The town was named after Mrs Rynie Hoffman.

Sezela River, South Coast

Sezela River mouth. A great crocodile known as Sezela was killed here in 1828 on Shaka's orders. For years it had terrorised a local tribe, the Malangeni.
