Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in the Greater Scottburgh or Umdoni Region.
There are a number of excellent scuba diving and
snorkeling sites in the vicinity of the Greater Scottburgh
or Umdoni Region.
The most important scuba diving sites being:
ALIWAL SHOAL
This dive site, lying 4kms off the Umkomaas coast is a
fossilised sand
dune of sponges, and soft and hard corals, and divers from
all over
the world come to experience the thrill of communing with
the
ragged-tooth sharks in 'Raggie' Cave. The one-and-a-half
kilometre
long and one-kilometre wide reef was named for the
barque 'Aliwal'
which sailed from London in September 1849 and was nearly
wrecked there. But some vessels were not that lucky and in
May
1884, the steamer 'Nebo' was wrecked on this reef and was
followed
in 1963 the wreck of American cargo ship, the 'Aimee Lykes'
and in 1994, the Norwegian tanker, the 'Produce'. The
wrecks of the
'Nebo' and 'Produce' are now favourite dive sites.

PROTEA BANKS
Situated 7.5km straight out to sea off Shelly Beach,
Protea Banks is also
regarded as one of the top shark and game fish dives in
the world. Lying
between 27m and 40m, the reef is 6km long and 800m wide and
incorporates a range of caves, pinnacles, ridges and
amphitheatres.
This is a must for experienced divers and is at its best
in autumn and
winter, which provide calm seas and excellent visibility. You will also find the
scuba diving
and snorkeling section of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism
website useful or you are welcome to complete a
