Introduction to Umdoni or the Greater Scottburgh area:WELCOME TO UMDONI
Umdoni is the magical stretch of coast and country
stretching from
Scottburgh to Mtwalume on KwaZulu-Natal’s south
coast.
Or “Ugu” as
our Zulu forefathers called it – “The Edge of
the Great
Water.”
Mystical it was then and mystical it remains today.
For below the Great Water, lie some of the most beautiful
dive sites
in the world – as unchanged now as they were
centuries
ago.
Deep
caves and gullies, hard and soft corals, tropical fish,
rays, abundant
marine plant life and lurking ragged tooth sharks. These
wonders of
the deep can be enjoyed by divers ranging from beginners to
the
more experienced.
Or if you prefer to stay on the surface of the Great Water,
you can
watch the dolphins play, the whales blow and the seabirds
wheel.
And you can cast your rod from the decks of a ski-boat or
from the
rocks - angling along this coast is great sport.
But if sheer relaxation is your choice, choose the sandy
safe sunkissed
beaches, which lie alongside the Great Water – bask,
swim,
surf or sailboard in the warm Indian Ocean. As safety is
our prime
concern, the majority of our beaches have shark nets and are
manned by trained lifesavers.
Away from the Great Water, are great golf courses
– with
some of
South Africa’s, and indeed, the world’s best,
within easy
access. This
area is part of South Africa’s “Golf
Coast” which boasts
some 11
courses – three of them amongst South Africa’s
top ten.
Inland from the Great Water lie the nature reserves –
places where
bird watching and game spotting can be done on foot, from a
vehicle
or even soaring above in a microlight or hang-gliding among
the
fish eagles and raptors which inhabit these skies. For the
more
adventurous we also offer a range of adventure sports.
Visit one of
the cultural sites or gaze in wonder at the prehistoric
rock art of the
truly ancient San people.
By night – or day for that matter – you can
sample the
sumptuous
fare at a variety of excellent restaurants and later enjoy
the local
music and dancing, and party the hours away.
“The Great Water” beckons – come and
enjoy its wonderful
warm
welcome and have the holiday of a lifetime.
Read on - and discover how. |
